Let Me Re-Introduce Myself

Hello all! Welcome to the Cypress Chiropractic blog! Thanks for reading.

Let me re-introduce myself. My name is Dr. Sarah Kalani Wharton. I like to call myself a “Carolina Girl” because I was born in Aiken, SC, but lived in Winston-Salem, NC for most of my childhood while still coming to the Lowcountry frequently to visit family. I moved to SC in my teen years, and then Charleston in 2004 to attend the College of Charleston. I have been living here ever since, except for the 4 years I attended Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC. Charleston is my favorite place to be and it is what I call home.

I am the owner and chiropractor of Cypress Chiropractic & Wellness. Cypress Chiropractic is my dream embodied. It is a space that allows me to fulfill my true passion, which is to serve and help the community by providing hands-on care to all people. I have always been a student of my own body, a creative and intuitive person, as well as an active athlete. When chiropractic found me in my teen years, it resonated deeply and it felt like the missing piece to my personal health journey. As time passed, and I experienced more care myself, I knew that it was the path I had to take to enable me to bring the benefits of chiropractic to my family, my friends, the community, and the ultimately the world!

The mission of Cypress Chiropractic is to serve the community by providing a holistic and natural approach to healthcare that promotes true health, healing, vitality, wellness, and the ability to thrive. Health comes from within, and chiropractic removes the barriers that are preventing your innate potential from expressing itself fully. These barriers are called subluxations. A subluxation is a misalignment in the spine, or any joint in the body, that interferes or blocks the nerve pathway of communication between your brain and your body, and your body to your brain. Chiropractic adjustments eliminate these barriers so that the nervous system can be free of interference, and so that you can begin to heal from within.

Throughout my life, I suffered from many musculoskeletal and spine injuries. My birth story is rather traumatic in itself. In my adolescent years, I suffered from torticollis, which is a condition that would cause a severe spasm of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle in the neck, restricting movement in my neck and causing my head to be stuck in lateral flexion for days. At around the age of 9 or 10 years old, I had an injury to my low back that I forgot about until it caught up with me in my 20’s when I herniated my lumbar disc, and had muscular back spasms that caused me to be immobile. This happened on a hand-full of separate occasions in my 20’s and early 30's.

During my high school and college soccer days, I tore the meniscus in my knees at separate occasions that also caused pain and dysfunction in my entire body from compensations. It wasn’t until I had knee surgery that my soccer coach suggested a chiropractor to help speed my healing process and get me back on the soccer field sooner. That was when I was 16 years old and that was my first chiropractic experience. It not only helped me feel better overall, but it was like a light bulb turned on inside of me.

I went to the chiropractor, on and off for many years, while not fully understanding why it helped, but feeling that there was change to my body each time. However, after throwing my back out for the 3rd time in my 20’s I decided that the answer was chiropractic, but that I needed to understand it deeper. I knew that I couldn’t continue with pain killers, muscle relaxers, and simply dealing with the symptoms that I was. I knew that if my back continued on the path that it was, by the time was in my 40’s I would have suffered so much and I would simply be unhappy.

Finally, in 2016 I started my journey at Sherman College of Chiropractic and for the first time in my life, I felt that I was on the right path. I felt hopeful and happy. I know that my personal experiences in dealing with injury and pain, gave me a deeper understanding of the body and the spine so that I can have that compassion when treating my patients.

In my creation of Cypress Chiropractic & Wellness, it made space for patients to start and/or continue on their healing and health journey, Also, it allows me to act upon my true passion, so that my soul can be complete.

I am currently accepting new patients, and am looking forward to seeing the evolution of the business and the health of the patients of Cypress Chiropractic. Make an appointment online today, to start your journey towards health and I look forward to joining your health team!
